The U.K. has deposits of coal, petroleum, natural gas, and iron ore. These natural resources formed the backbone of the country's industry: auto production, steel manufacturing, and shipbuilding. Today, the U.K. are turning to cleaner forms of energy because these natural resources are being used up. Therefore, many people who once had jobs in the mining and manufacturing industry are now being retrained for jobs in the service industry.

Fishing is a very profitable industry along the shores of the U.K. Cod, herring, mackerel, crab, and shellfish are among the resources that fisherman catch.

Over half of the land in the U.K. is used for farms. The land is arable, which makes it suitable for growing crops. The U.K. is able to grow 60% of its own food. Farms with sheep, beef cattle, and pigs use the land to keep their businesses going.
